Green Energy for Students: How Solar, Wind and Hydro Power Work (Class 5 to 10)

24 October 2026

Green energy is electricity made from sources that do not run out and pollute much less — such as the Sun, wind, flowing water and plant waste. Most power stations, clean or not, work on one idea: something spins a turbine connected to a generator. Solar panels are the exception — they turn sunlight straight into electricity. New Age Learning's Green Energy books explain this through stories and experiments for Class 5 to 10.

How clean energy makes electricity

  • Solar: solar cells turn sunlight into direct current (DC); an inverter changes it to the alternating current (AC) used at home.
  • Wind: moving air spins turbine blades; stronger wind gives much more power, which is why wind farms care about wind speed.
  • Hydro: falling or flowing water spins a turbine — clean power, but dams also affect rivers and the people and animals who depend on them.
  • Bio-energy: plants, crop waste and food waste can be turned into fuel or gas.

Power and energy are not the same

Power is how fast energy is used or made (watts); energy is the total amount used over time (watt-hours or units). A 1,000-watt heater running for one hour uses one unit of electricity — the "unit" on your electricity bill.

What students explore in the Green Energy books

One of the books asks a question in every chapter:

  1. How do clean energy sources really make electricity?
  2. What is the difference between power and energy?
  3. How much power can a solar panel really make?
  4. Why does a wind farm care so much about wind speed?
  5. How does hydropower work — and what does it cost a river?
  6. What is nuclear energy, and is it clean?
  7. Can plants, waste and water really fuel our future?
  8. How will India keep the lights on with clean energy?

Every chapter includes stories, solved examples, a Green Energy Lab and quizzes with instant feedback. Start with Green Energy - Advance 1 or see all Green Energy and other story books.

Easy green-energy activities

  • Measure how long a solar garden light glows after a sunny versus a cloudy day.
  • Make a paper pinwheel and test it at different fan speeds.
  • Read your home's electricity bill and find the units used this month.

Frequently asked questions

What is green energy in simple words?

Electricity from sources that are naturally renewed, like sunlight, wind and water, and that pollute far less than coal or oil.

Which classes are the Green Energy books for?

There are books from about Class 5 up to Class 10; each book shows its classes.

Is green energy part of the science syllabus?

Sources of energy, electricity and the environment appear in NCERT Science, so these books support school science too — see Science practice.

Are the books free?

Yes, they can be read free on phone or computer.
