Chapter 1: Where You Are Now — The ML Lifecycle

In this chapter

  • Vivaan from Noida — graduating from Senior 1 to a first real model.
  • The complete 6-step ML lifecycle: data → model → train → eval → deploy → monitor.
  • Why deployed AI is different from textbook AI.
  • The 3 tools you need on your laptop: Python, scikit-learn, Streamlit.
  • Your first portfolio project goal — set this week.

The Big Idea

Every real AI in India — Bhashini, Niramai, the UPI fraud check, ISRO’s Chandrayaan brain — was built by the same 6-step process you will learn this chapter. It is not magic. It is a workflow. And by the end of THIS book, you will have walked that workflow yourself and shipped a working AI to the public internet.

Did you know?

Avani from Bengaluru — whose Chapter 8 story you will read — deployed her Air Quality AI in 7 days using only what is taught in this book. 1,247 users tried it on day one. She is now 15.

Builder Profile: Vivaan

Noida, NCR · age 14

Vivaan turns his Senior-1 Python skills into a real deployed model by following the 6-step ML lifecycle.

Vivaan finished Senior 1 in February. He knew Python. He knew mean, median, dot product, probability. He could write 30 lines of code without help. But when his school’s Atal Tinkering Lab teacher asked him to BUILD an AI project for the science fair, he froze. “Where do I even start?”

The teacher smiled and wrote one word on the board: LIFECYCLE. “Knowing Python is like knowing the alphabet. Now you write the book. Every real AI engineer follows six steps — Data, Model, Train, Evaluate, Deploy, Monitor. Each step is something you can DO. Each one is one weekend of work.”

Vivaan opened a notebook. He wrote: ‘Weekend 1: get a dataset. Weekend 2: train a model. Weekend 3: evaluate. Weekend 4: deploy.’ He had a deployed AI six weeks later — predicting Delhi AQI from historical data. His teacher posted the URL on the school WhatsApp group. 45 parents tried it. That is when Vivaan stopped being a student. He became an engineer.

The 6-step ML lifecycle

Every chapter of this book teaches one of these six steps. (1) DATA — find or collect a dataset relevant to your problem: CSV, JSON, image folder. (2) MODEL — pick an algorithm (linear, tree, neural net); choose by problem, not by hype. (3) TRAIN — show examples and adjust weights; most of your time is here. (4) EVALUATE — test on data the model has never seen; accuracy alone is not enough. (5) DEPLOY — put your model behind a web page or API so others can use it. (6) MONITOR — watch how it behaves in real life; real data drifts and models age.

💻 CODE LAB Hello scikit-learn — 5 Lines to Real ML

# Install once: pip install scikit-learn
from sklearn.datasets import load_iris
from sklearn.tree import DecisionTreeClassifier

data = load_iris()
model = DecisionTreeClassifier()
model.fit(data.data, data.target)
print('Trained! Accuracy:', model.score(data.data, data.target))
# Output: Trained! Accuracy: 1.0  <- over-fit warning! Read Ch 6.

⚙ TRY IT TODAY

Go to colab.research.google.com (free, no install). Paste the code above. Hit run — you just trained your first real ML model. Now CHANGE one thing: print model.predict(data.data[:3]) to see actual predictions. Hint: predict returns flower type as 0, 1, or 2 — map them to ‘setosa’, ‘versicolor’, ‘virginica’ using data.target_names.

Solved illustrations

1. What is the difference between Senior 1 and Senior 2?

Show answer

Answer: Senior 1 taught Python + maths. Senior 2 teaches the LIFECYCLE — finding data, training, evaluating, deploying. You stop reading about AI and start building deployed AI.

2. Why is scikit-learn used so much in India?

Show answer

Answer: It is free, well-documented, fast, and used at top Indian AI companies — Sarvam, Krutrim, Niramai. Most jobs want sklearn experience. Master it BEFORE TensorFlow or PyTorch.

3. Do I need a powerful laptop?

Show answer

Answer: No. Google Colab gives you a free GPU in your browser. Most of this book runs on a 4-year-old laptop. Hardware is not the bottleneck. Persistence is.

4. What does ‘deploy’ actually mean?

Show answer

Answer: It means your AI runs on a server somewhere on the internet, with a public URL like yourname.streamlit.app. Anyone can use it. That is what makes you a real engineer.

5. Will I really build something deployable in this book?

Show answer

Answer: Yes. Chapter 8 walks you through deploying a real Streamlit app for FREE. You will have a working URL by the end. Many Indian teens (Avani, Krish, others) have done it before you.
