Working Rules
A science lab has safety rules. A maths lab has working rules. They keep your answers honest.
- Show your steps. A correct answer with no steps cannot be checked, and a wrong answer with steps can be fixed.
- Check the units. 50 g and 50 kg are very different; so are 30° and 30 cm. Write the unit on every answer.
- Estimate before you calculate. A circle’s circumference must lie between 3 and 4 times its diameter, so check that yours does.
- A wrong answer is information. It tells you which idea to look at again. Read “what you should have done” carefully.
- Never rub out your working. Cross it out with one line, so you can see later what you tried.
- Check by going backwards. Put your answer back into the equation; check a subtraction by adding.
- Test a rule before you trust it. One counter-example is enough to break a rule. A few examples are never enough to prove one.
⚠ Safety for the hands-on activities
Many Do it for real activities use scissors, a compass, coins, dice, water or rice. Following the CBSE Maths Lab rules keeps everyone safe:
- Start only when your teacher says so, and follow the instructions carefully. Never work alone in the lab.
- Cut paper with round-tipped scissors, cutting away from your body. Hand scissors over handle first.
- Keep the sharp points of compasses and dividers facing down, and put them back in the geometry box after use.
- Pour water, sand or rice over a tray. Wipe up any spill at once so nobody slips, and tell your teacher if anything breaks.
- Keep coins, dice and small pieces away from your mouth, and count them back into the kit at the end.
- Keep water away from the computer, board and plugs. Touch switches only with dry hands.
- Put every kit back in its labelled place, and wash your hands with soap and water when you leave the lab.
