What Next? Careers in Science
You have spent this book measuring, predicting and explaining. That is not only school work — it is what a great many people in India do for a living. This section is about where those habits can take you.
First, three honest points
- There are far more than two careers in science. Engineering and medicine are the famous ones, but research, data science, agriculture, forestry, environment, forensics, teaching, technical trades, and starting your own company are all real, respected and in demand.
- Your stream matters, but it is not a life sentence. PCM opens engineering and physical sciences; PCB opens medicine and life sciences; PCMB keeps both open; and there are good science-linked paths through commerce and vocational streams too. People change direction later far more often than you would think.
- Expensive coaching is not the only road. Government schools, NCERT textbooks, free online lectures, Navodaya and Sainik schools, scholarships such as NMMS and INSPIRE, and Olympiads have carried thousands of students to the best institutions in the country.

Choose everything you enjoy — not what you think you should choose. There are no wrong answers, and you may pick as many as you like.
Which subject leads where?
| If you enjoyed… | It is the foundation of… |
|---|---|
| Electricity, circuits, motors (Exp. 1–5) | Electrical and electronics engineering, power systems, robotics, ISRO and DRDO technology, electrician and technician trades |
| Lenses and the eye (Exp. 6–7) | Optometry, ophthalmology, optical engineering, photography, astronomy |
| Reactions, pH, metallurgy (Exp. 8–11) | Chemical engineering, metallurgy, pharmacy, materials science, food technology, quality testing |
| Carbon compounds and soaps (Exp. 12–14) | Pharmaceuticals, petrochemicals, polymers, cosmetics, agrochemicals |
| Circulation, reflexes, respiration (Exp. 15–17) | Medicine, nursing, physiotherapy, sports science, veterinary science, biomedical engineering |
| Reproduction and heredity (Exp. 18–20) | Genetics, biotechnology, plant breeding, genetic counselling, agricultural research |
A short, honest word about pressure
Board exams matter, but they do not measure your worth, and a single mark sheet has never decided the whole of anyone's life. Many fine scientists, engineers and doctors in India did not top their class in Class 10. If the pressure ever feels too much, talk to a parent, a teacher or a counsellor — asking for help is a sign of good sense, exactly like admitting an experiment failed and running it again.
What to do this year
Keep a notebook of the questions that genuinely puzzle you. Visit a laboratory, a factory, a farm or a hospital if you can. Ask three working people how they got their job — most will be glad to tell you. And keep running experiments, because the habit of proof will serve you in any career you choose.
