Green Energy Glossary

Alternating current (AC)
Current that keeps reversing direction; India’s grid uses 50 hertz.
Anemometer
An instrument that measures wind speed.
Bagasse
Dry sugarcane fibre left after crushing, burned to make steam and power.
Capacity factor
The share of its full rating that a power plant actually produces over time.
Chain reaction
A process where each fission causes further fissions.
Containment
The strong concrete and steel building that encloses a nuclear reactor.
Control rods
Rods that absorb neutrons to control or stop a nuclear reaction.
Direct current (DC)
Current that flows in one direction, as from a battery or solar cell.
Doping
Adding tiny amounts of other elements to silicon to make n-type or p-type layers.
Dosimeter
A badge or device that measures how much radiation a person receives.
Efficiency
The share of input energy turned into useful output.
Electrolysis
Splitting water into hydrogen and oxygen using electricity.
Ethanol
An alcohol fuel made from sugarcane, grains or waste, blended with petrol.
Fission
Splitting a heavy nucleus into smaller ones, releasing energy.
Fuel cell
A device that combines hydrogen and oxygen to make electricity and water.
Green hydrogen
Hydrogen made by electrolysis powered by renewable electricity.
Head
The height through which water falls in a hydro plant.
Inverter
A device that converts DC into AC.
Kilowatt-hour (kWh)
A unit of energy: 1 kilowatt used for 1 hour (one “unit”).
Moderator
A material that slows neutrons in a reactor, such as heavy water.
Nacelle
The housing on top of a wind turbine holding the gearbox and generator.
p–n junction
The boundary between p-type and n-type silicon that drives current in a solar cell.
Penstock
The pipe carrying water from a reservoir down to a hydro turbine.
Photon
A tiny packet of light energy.
Pumped storage
A hydro plant that pumps water uphill to store energy and releases it later.
Thorium
A radioactive element India has in large amounts, planned as future nuclear fuel.
Watt (W)
The unit of power: the rate of using or making energy.
