📖 Chapter 9 of 11 · Green Energy - Advance 1 · Class 8

Green Energy Lab

Seven interactive tools to test the science in this book. Change the numbers, predict what will happen, then check. All values are simplified for learning, but the patterns are real.

Lab 1. Solar Rooftop Planner

Each panel is rated 550 W. Choose how many panels fit on the roof, how many peak sun hours your town gets, and how much electricity your family uses each month. Will the roof cover your needs?

Panels

Peak sun hours

Family use (units/month)

Lab 2. Wind Speed and the Cube Rule

A 3 MW turbine starts at 3 m/s, reaches full power at 12 m/s, and shuts down above 25 m/s. Move the wind speed and watch the power curve.

Wind speed

Lab 3. Hydropower Calculator

Power (kW) ≈ 9.8 × flow (m³/s) × head (m) × 0.9. Change the height the water falls and how much flows each second. How many homes can the plant supply?

Head (m)

Flow (m³/s)

Lab 4. Chain Reaction Controller

Control rods absorb neutrons. The multiplication factor tells how many new fissions each fission causes. Keep it at 1.00 for steady power. This is a simplified model, not a real reactor.

Lab 5. Carbon Counter

How much carbon dioxide is released to make electricity? The values below are approximate life-cycle figures (including building the plant). Choose how many units to compare.

Units of electricity

Lab 6. Grid Balancer

Slide through a day. Steady sources (nuclear and hydro), wind and solar try to meet demand; coal fills any gap. Switch on grid batteries to store midday solar for the evening. This is a simplified model of a future grid with far more solar and wind than today — in 2026, coal still makes most of India’s electricity.

Lab 7. Home Energy Audit

Enter how many of each appliance your home has and how many hours a day each is used. The tool estimates your monthly units and bill. (The fridge figure is its average power, since its compressor switches on and off.)
