Chapter 2: The Sun's Amazing Energy

How does the Sun give us power?

The Sun pours out light every day. Special flat boards called solar panels catch that sunlight and turn it into electricity. They make no smoke and no noise — just clean power from the sky.

When do solar panels work best?

Solar panels work best in bright daytime sunshine. On sunny days they make lots of power; on cloudy days, less; and at night they rest, using the power that was stored during the day.

Story Time — The Roof That Drank the Sun

Priya · Madurai, Tamil Nadu

Priya noticed workers fitting shiny dark-blue boards onto her family's roof. “What are those?” she asked. “Solar panels,” said her father. “They are going to drink the sunshine and give us electricity.” Priya giggled. “Can a roof really drink the Sun?”

That afternoon, under the strong Madurai Sun, her father showed her the electricity meter. “Look — the panels are making power right now, just from sunlight.” Priya put her hand up to the warm Sun, then pointed at the glowing meter. “The Sun is filling our house with power!”

“And here is the best part,” her father said. “No smoke, and no bill from anyone. The Sun sends its light for free, and the panels turn it into clean electricity.” Priya thought this was the cleverest thing she had ever heard.

In the evening, when the panels rested, the family still had light. “How, if the Sun is gone?” Priya asked. “We saved some of the day's power in a battery,” her father explained, “like keeping water in a pot for later.”

Priya loved the idea that the bright day could light up the dark evening. “Our roof is a sunshine-catcher,” she declared. And every sunny morning after that, she would look up and say a cheerful “Thank you” to the Sun.

Story Time — The Solar Lamp for Studying

Ravi · a village in Bihar

Ravi loved to study, but in his village the evenings were often dark, and it was hard to read. Then his sister brought home a small solar lamp. “Leave it in the Sun all day,” she said, “and it will give you light all evening.”

Ravi was doubtful. He placed the little lamp on the windowsill in the morning sunshine and went to school. When he came home and switched it on that night, it glowed steady and bright. “It works! It really works!” he cried.

“The lamp caught the sunlight all day and kept it inside,” his sister explained. “Now it is giving that light back to you.” Ravi could hardly believe that the Sun from the morning was helping him read his books at night.

“No smoke, no cost, and it does not run out as long as the Sun shines,” his sister said. Ravi thought of the old smoky lamp they used to use, which stung his eyes. This clean little light was so much better.

That night Ravi studied longer and more happily than ever before, his book bright under the gentle solar glow. “The Sun,” he thought as he read, “is helping me learn.” And he promised himself he would always leave his lamp out to drink the daytime Sun.
