Chapter 6: Saving Energy Every Day

Why should we save energy?

Even clean energy is precious, and making any power takes effort. So we should never waste it. Saving energy means using only what we need — and switching off the rest. It helps our home, our bill and our Earth.

How can we save energy?

We can switch off lights and fans when we leave a room, use sunlight during the day instead of bulbs, and not leave things running for no reason. These small habits, done by everyone, add up to a very big help.

Story Time — The Switch-Off Game

Fatima · Lucknow

Fatima's grandmother had a gentle habit: whenever she left a room, she switched off the light. “Why always switch it off, Nani?” Fatima asked. “Why not leave it, since we will come back?”

“Because a light left on with no one to use it is wasted power, beta,” her grandmother said. “And wasting is never good — not water, not food, not electricity.” Fatima thought about this. It seemed such a small thing, one little switch.

So her grandmother made it a game. “Let us see who can spot a light or fan left on for no reason, and switch it off first.” Fatima loved games, and soon she was racing around the house, delighted, flicking off forgotten switches.

“You are saving energy with every switch,” her grandmother said. “And if every family in India does this, imagine how much power we save together.” Fatima's eyes went wide at the thought of the whole country switching off together.

That month, when the electricity bill came, it was smaller than before. “You did that,” her grandmother told her proudly. Fatima felt like a hero for the smallest of reasons. “Saving energy is easy,” she said. “You just have to remember.”

Story Time — Sunlight Instead of Bulbs

Dev · Kolkata

Dev liked to read in his room, and he always switched on the light — even in the middle of a bright, sunny day. One afternoon his mother gently pulled open the curtains, and warm daylight flooded the room. “Now try reading,” she said, and switched off the bulb.

Dev looked down at his book. He could see the words perfectly well — better, even. “I don't need the light at all!” he said, surprised. “The Sun is already lighting my page.”

“Why use a bulb when the Sun is giving us free light?” his mother said. “In the daytime, open the curtains and let the sunshine in. Save the bulbs for after dark, when you truly need them.”

Dev felt a little silly for all the sunny days he had burned electricity for no reason. “So I was wasting power without even noticing,” he said. “Most people do,” his mother said kindly. “Noticing is the first step to saving.”

After that, Dev made a habit of it: curtains open by day, bulbs off until dusk. His room felt brighter and cheerier, too, full of real sunlight. “The best light,” he decided, “is the one that costs nothing and makes no smoke — the Sun's.”
