Chapter 1: Who Lights Up the Sky?

What is the Sun?

The Sun is a star — a very large ball of hot, glowing gas. It is the closest star to the Earth, which is why it looks so big and bright to us. Every other star is also a sun, but each one is so far away that it looks like a tiny dot at night.

What does the Sun give us?

The Sun gives our world light and warmth. Its light helps us see, its warmth keeps us cosy, and plants use its light to make their food. Without the Sun, there would be no day, no plants, and no life on the Earth.

Story Time — The Best Thing in the World

Aarav · Delhi

Aarav did not enjoy waking up early — not even a little. So when his grandmother gently woke him one cold winter morning, he pulled the blanket over his head. “Dadi, it is still dark,” he said.

“Come, child,” she whispered. “I wish to show you the best thing in the world. But we must be quick.” Curious now, Aarav walked up to the terrace, still wrapped in his warm blanket. The sky was grey and the air was cold. “There is nothing here,” he said.

“Wait,” said his grandmother, pointing towards the east. “Watch that edge of the sky.” Slowly, the grey turned soft pink, then glowing orange. All at once, bright gold light spilled across the rooftops of Delhi, and a gentle warmth touched Aarav's cold face. “It is the Sun,” he said softly.

“Yes,” his grandmother smiled. “Every single morning, without missing even one day, the Sun lights up our whole sky and warms the whole Earth.” Aarav looked at the glowing gold circle. “But what is it, Dadi? Is it a giant lamp?”

“No, child. The Sun is a star — a giant ball of hot, glowing gas, so far away that its light takes eight minutes to reach us. It is the closest star to the Earth. The other stars you see at night are also suns, but they are much farther away, so they appear tiny.”

Aarav thought about this: a real star, warming his face on a Delhi terrace. From that day, he never complained about mornings again. Every sunrise, he knew, was a giant star quietly greeting the whole world.

Story Time — The Flower That Followed the Light

Priya · Madurai, Tamil Nadu

Priya had planted one small sunflower in her grandmother's garden in Madurai, and she visited it every day. One morning she noticed something strange, and it worried her. “Amma,” she called, “my plant is broken. Its head keeps turning!”

Her mother came and looked. In the early morning, the little sunflower was facing east, exactly where the Sun had risen. “Watch it again this evening,” her mother said, “and then tell me what you saw.”

All day Priya kept checking. Slowly, the sunflower turned. By evening its bright face pointed west, following the Sun across the sky, like a child watching a friend walk past. “It is following the Sun!” Priya said in surprise.

“Well noticed,” said her mother. “Your sunflower loves sunlight. Plants use the Sun's light to make their own food. That is how they grow strong. Without the Sun, there would be no plants at all.”

Priya thought about her lunch that day — rice, sambar and vegetables, all grown in fields under the same Sun. “So the Sun feeds everyone?” she asked. “In a way, yes,” her mother replied. “The Sun is not only a light in the sky. It is the reason anything can live and grow on the Earth.”
