Chapter 6: Comets, Meteors and Shooting Stars
What is a comet?
A comet is a great ball of ice and dust that travels around the Sun on a very long path. When a comet comes near the Sun, some of its ice turns to gas and dust, streaming out behind it as a long, glowing tail. A bright comet is a rare and beautiful visitor to our sky.
What is a shooting star?
A ‘shooting star’ is not a star at all. It is a tiny piece of rock or dust from space that rushes into the air high above us and burns up, leaving a bright streak for just a second. We call these meteors. On some nights, many appear together in a ‘meteor shower’.
A gentle note: “a shooting star is a star that has fallen”
It is a lovely old idea that a shooting star is a star falling from the sky, and the name makes it easy to believe. But a real star is a giant sun, far too large and far too distant ever to fall to the Earth. A ‘shooting star’ is really a tiny piece of rock or dust burning up high in our air. The true explanation is just as wonderful — and you may still make your wish.
Story Time — The Visitor with a Tail
Ishaan · Nagpur, Maharashtra
Ishaan, who had once seen Saturn through a telescope, read in the newspaper that a comet would be visible for a few nights — something that might not happen again for many years. He begged his parents to take him away from the city lights, and they drove out to a dark, open field.
There, low in the sky, he saw it: a soft, glowing smudge with a long, faint tail stretching behind it. “That is the comet,” his father said. “A giant ball of ice and dust, travelling around the Sun.” “Why does it have a tail?” Ishaan asked.
“As it comes near the Sun,” his father explained, “the Sun's heat turns some of its ice into gas and dust, which streams out behind it. That is the tail you see. The comet has travelled for many, many years to pass by us tonight.”
Ishaan stared for a long time. “And it will not come back for years?” “Not for a very long time,” his father said. “Comets travel on enormous paths. Some take dozens of years to circle the Sun once, and a few take thousands.”
Ishaan felt he was witnessing something rare and precious — a traveller from the edge of the Solar System, passing by just once in his childhood. He memorised the sight, so that one day he could tell his own children about the night the comet came.
Story Time — A Wish on a Streak of Light
Sara · Goa
On a warm night in Goa, Sara and her cousins lay on the terrace to watch what the newspaper called a ‘meteor shower’. “Make a wish when you see a shooting star!” her little cousin said. Suddenly, a bright streak flashed across the sky. “There! A falling star!”
“It is not truly a star,” said Sara's aunt, who taught science. “A star is a giant sun, far too big and far too distant to fall. What you saw was a tiny piece of rock, no bigger than a pebble, rushing into the air high above us and burning up.”
“A pebble made that big streak?” Sara asked. “Yes,” her aunt said. “It moves so fast that it heats the air and glows brightly for a moment as it burns away. We call it a meteor. Tonight, the Earth is passing through a cloud of such dust, so we see many of them — a meteor shower.”
Sara watched streak after streak flash and fade. “So they are not stars falling from the sky,” she said, “but tiny rocks burning up in our air.” “Exactly,” her aunt said. “The stars are all still safely in their places. You may still make a wish, of course — but now you know what you are truly seeing.”
Sara made her wish anyway, smiling, as another bright meteor crossed the Goan sky. It felt even more wonderful now that she understood it — a speck of space, ending its long journey in a flash of light above her home.
Solved Examples
Think first, then read the answer.

2. Why does a comet have a tail?
Show answer
Answer: Near the Sun, some of the comet's ice turns to gas and dust, which streams out behind it as a tail.
3. What is a ‘shooting star’ really?
Show answer
Answer: It is a tiny piece of rock or dust burning up high in the air — called a meteor. It is not a real star.
4. Why can a real star never fall to the Earth?
Show answer
Answer: Because a star is a giant sun, far too large and far too distant to fall.
5. What is a meteor shower?
Show answer
Answer: It is when the Earth passes through a cloud of space dust, so we see many meteors in one night.
