Experiment 6 — Mirrors Facing Mirrors

Topic: Physics · Class 8 · Light: multiple reflection and lateral inversion

Aim: Arrange two mirrors so that you see exactly five images of the object.

Daily: A kaleidoscope, a barber’s two facing mirrors and a periscope all use multiple reflection. And every time you read AMBULANCE spelled backwards on a van, you are seeing lateral inversion.

Question: Two mirrors are placed at 90°. How many images of a marble will you see?

Question: The image in a plane mirror is…

Exp: It cannot be caught on a screen, and left and right appear swapped.

Question: AMBULANCE is written reversed on vans because of…

Exp: The driver ahead reads it correctly in the rear-view mirror.

Exp: Multiple reflections build the symmetric pattern.
