Chapter 4: AI That Creates — Generative AI
In this chapter
- How AI makes pictures, music, and video that never existed.
- Kabir’s AI short film — and the ethics of AI art.
- Diffusion models: turning noise into images, step by step.
- Real Indian generative AI: ad agencies, music studios, animation.
- Who owns AI-made art? The big copyright question.
The Big Idea
For 70 years AI was ‘discriminative’ — it could only RECOGNISE things (cat or dog? spam or not?). Since 2022, AI became ‘generative’ — it can CREATE things. Whole new images, songs, stories, videos. This changed everything: from how movies are made to how teachers explain. India’s creative industry is being remade as you read this book.
Did you know?
The first viral generative AI image was created in 2022. By 2025, over 50 million AI-generated images were being made every single day. Indian wedding photographers, news channels, and film studios all use generative AI today.
Story 1: Kabir’s AI Short Film
From: Pune, Maharashtra · Kabir, age 13
Kabir loves cinema. His dream is to direct films like Anurag Kashyap. But he has no camera, no actors, no money. Last year his elder cousin showed him AI image and video tools. Kabir’s eyes lit up.
He wrote a script — a 2-minute story of a Pune boy who finds a magical Lal Mahal. Then he typed prompts: ‘Monsoon evening in Shaniwar Wada, golden light, child running with kite.’ The AI made stunning images. He turned them into a short film with AI music.
His film won the school festival. But one judge asked, “Kabir, did YOU make this — or did the AI?” Kabir thought hard. “I had the IDEA. I chose every frame. I told the story. The AI was my brush. But the painting was mine.” That answer made him think for weeks.
How AI makes a picture from nothing
The diffusion magic, explained simply: imagine starting with a photo of a cat, then adding a tiny bit of TV-static noise, then more, then more. After 1000 steps, it is pure noise. Generative AI learns to REVERSE this — it starts from pure noise and removes it step by step, guided by YOUR prompt, until a picture appears. This is called a DIFFUSION MODEL.
💻 BEHIND THE CODE How AI Makes Your Cat Picture
READ user prompt: 'orange cat in saree'
START with random noise (TV static)
REPEAT 50 times:
LOOK at noise + understand prompt
REMOVE a bit of noise in cat-shaped way
AFTER 50 rounds: clear picture appears
RETURN the image to user
Generative AI in India — right now
How Indian creators are using generative AI today.
📁 CASE FILE Bollywood Posters
Speed: Studios use AI to create poster ideas in hours, not weeks.
Teamwork: Old-school illustrators now work WITH AI as a co-pilot.
New role: A new role ‘AI prompt artist’ is paid Rs 50,000+ per month.
Reach: Used by major films and OTT platforms across India.
📁 CASE FILE Advertising & E-commerce
Cheaper photos: Flipkart, Myntra use AI to make product photos cheaper.
Diversity: AI generates models in different sizes and skin tones.
Scale: Local brands shoot 1 product, AI shows it in 50 settings.
Savings: Boosts diversity AND saves crores in photography costs.
📁 CASE FILE Indian Music & Animation
Music: Indie musicians use AI to make backing tracks instantly.
Instruments: AI music tools support sitar, tabla, dhol, veena.
Animation: Studios use AI for backgrounds — humans handle characters.
Low cost: Indian YouTubers now make full music videos for under Rs 5,000.
⚖ DEBATE IT! Who Owns the AI Art?
Kabir typed a prompt. The AI made the picture. He won a prize.
KABIR OWNS IT
He had the idea, the vision, the prompts. AI was his tool, like a camera.
AI COMPANY OWNS IT
AI was trained on millions of human artists’ work. They deserve credit too.

Understanding generative AI
1. What does ‘generative’ mean in Generative AI?
Show answer
Answer: It means CREATING something new — a picture, a song, a story, a video — that did not exist before. This is different from old AI which only recognised things (cat vs dog, spam vs not).
2. Does AI ‘imagine’ like humans?
Show answer
Answer: No. AI ‘remixes’ patterns from millions of human-made images, songs, and texts it saw during training. It is more like a very smart blender — not true imagination. But the output can still surprise even the engineers!
3. What is a prompt and why does it matter?
Show answer
Answer: A prompt is your instruction to the AI. Bad prompt: ‘dog’. Good prompt: ‘Indian street dog sitting under a Diwali lamp in a Jaipur haveli, golden hour, watercolour style.’ The clearer your prompt, the better the output. This skill is now a career — prompt engineering.
4. Why is AI music controversial for some musicians?
Show answer
Answer: Many AI music tools were trained on real musicians’ songs WITHOUT permission. The musicians worry their style is being ‘copied’. India is now debating new copyright laws to protect creators.
5. Is using AI art for school projects cheating?
Show answer
Answer: Depends on rules. If your teacher said ‘draw your own’, then AI art is cheating. If they said ‘design a poster’, it may be fine if you mention ‘made with AI help’. Always be honest. Honesty is non-negotiable in the AI era.
