📖 Chapter 5 of 9 · AI For New Learner Advance 2 (Multi Indian Language) · Class 8
Chapter 5: AI That Saves India
In this chapter
- Naina’s desert farm — AI fighting climate change.
- Aryan’s robot factory — Indian robotics taking off.
- Niramai’s thermal AI catching cancer early.
- ISRO’s AI that landed Chandrayaan-3 on the Moon.
- UPI fraud AI stopping crores of rupees from criminals.
The Big Idea
India has problems the rest of the world does not: 700 million farmers, 1.4 billion citizens, diverse climates, 22 languages, crores of small businesses. AI built FOR India by Indians is solving these problems in ways no foreign company could. From the Moon to your village’s mandi, Indian AI is everywhere — and the next decade belongs to those who can build it.
Did you know?
Chandrayaan-3 became the first mission to land near the Moon’s South Pole in 2023 — and AI-based vision and decision software built by ISRO scientists made it possible. India achieved what NASA and Russia could not.
Story 1: Naina’s Desert AI
From: Jodhpur, Rajasthan · Naina, age 12
Naina lives near Mandore. Her family grows bajra and moong on dry land where rain comes only 30 days a year. Two summers ago, her father lost half the crop to a heatwave. Naina was angry at the sky, at fate.
Then a Krishi Vigyan Kendra team visited. They installed soil sensors, paired with a drone that scans every plant weekly, and an AI from Bengaluru that predicts the weather using NASA satellite data and farmer reports. The AI now tells her father exactly WHEN to water, what to sow, and which days are dangerous.
This year — even with two heatwaves — the family had a full harvest. Naina realised something powerful: AI is not magic from Silicon Valley. It is a tool that, in the right hands, can feed her village.
Story 2: Aryan at a Robotics Startup
From: Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu · Aryan, age 13
Coimbatore is India’s robotics capital. Hundreds of factories. Aryan’s tuition centre took the class to a startup called Bot-Lab. He saw something incredible — a small robot picking mangoes from a conveyor, sorting them ripe/unripe, faster than 10 humans together.
The founder, Mr Senthil, was once a tuition student in Tiruppur. “Robots are dumb iron boxes,” he told the class. “AI gives them eyes, brain, hands.” He showed how the robot’s camera saw each mango, the AI decided ripe or not, and the arm moved within 1.2 seconds.
Aryan asked, “Sir, will robots take all the jobs?” Senthil smiled. “They will take the boring ones. They will create NEW jobs — designing, training, fixing, dreaming. Be the one who builds the robot, not the one it replaces.”
Indian AI saving lives & money
Three case files from India’s AI heroes.
📁 CASE FILE Niramai — Bangalore
Founders: Founded by women scientists from Mysuru.
How: AI uses heat patterns to spot breast cancer.
Benefits: No radiation, painless, costs 1/10 of MRI.
Reach: Already used in 100+ Indian hospitals, saving thousands of lives every year.
📁 CASE FILE ISRO AI — Chandrayaan-3
2023: India landed on the Moon’s South Pole.
How: AI software made real-time landing decisions.
Kit: Cameras + sensors + decision AI on the lander.
Cost: Cheaper than a Hollywood film (Rs 615 crore) — and made India the 4th country on the Moon.
📁 CASE FILE UPI Fraud AI — NPCI
Scale: NPCI runs UPI — 10+ billion transactions per month.
Speed: AI checks EVERY payment in under 1 millisecond.
Watches: Suspicious patterns: new device, odd amount, late hour.
Impact: Blocks fraud in real time, saving Indians thousands of crores yearly. That ‘is this really you?’ prompt is the AI working.

Real-world Indian AI explained
1. What is Krishi-DSS?
Show answer
Answer: Krishi-DSS is the Krishi Decision Support System — an AI built by the Indian government to help farmers. It uses satellite data, soil sensors, and weather to suggest when to sow, water, harvest. Naina’s father uses it daily.
2. Why is Niramai special?
Show answer
Answer: Most cancer-screening machines (MRI, mammogram) are expensive and painful. Niramai uses thermal images — heat patterns — to spot cancer. Cheaper, painless, no radiation. Built by Indian women scientists. Saves crores of rupees and thousands of lives.
3. Did Chandrayaan-3 really use AI?
Show answer
Answer: Yes. The lander made hundreds of decisions per second during the final descent — using AI to read cameras, lasers, sensors. NASA and Russia have failed at the same task. India succeeded — proof that Indian AI is world-class.
4. How does UPI fraud AI stop crime?
Show answer
Answer: Every UPI transaction passes through an AI in under 1 millisecond. The AI looks at: who you usually pay, your usual amount, your usual time, your device. If something looks odd (new device, big amount, midnight), it pauses the transaction or asks for extra check.
5. Will robots take jobs in India?
Show answer
Answer: Yes, AND no. Boring repetitive jobs (counting, sorting, assembling) will be done by robots. But thousands of NEW jobs are being created: robot designers, AI trainers, machine technicians, ethics auditors. Like Senthil said — be the one who BUILDS the robot.
