📖 Chapter 4 of 6 · How the Sun Says Goodbye · All ages

A gentle puff, not a blast

Eventually the Sun sighs out its outer layers into space in soft, glowing clouds of gas. This beautiful cloud is called a planetary nebula — even though it has nothing to do with planets, it just looked round and planet-like to old astronomers through their telescopes.

It's calm and slow, not a bang. Think of it less like a firework and more like a giant, glowing smoke ring drifting into the dark.
