📖 Chapter 1 of 6 · How the Sun Says Goodbye · All ages

The Sun runs low on fuel

Right now the Sun is happily burning hydrogen in its core, the way it has for about 4.6 billion years. But in around 5 billion years, the hydrogen fuel in its core will start running out.

When that happens, the Sun's core shrinks and heats up, and its outer layers start to puff outward. This is the beginning of the Sun becoming a red giant.
