What is AI?
What is AI?
AI is short for Artificial Intelligence. “Artificial” means made by people. “Intelligence” means the power to think and learn. So AI is a kind of cleverness that humans have put inside computers and machines. AI can answer your questions, recognise your face, suggest songs, and even drive cars!
Story 1: Aarav and the Smart Speaker
From: Delhi · Character: Aarav, age 9
One Sunday morning, Aarav was sitting in his Chandni Chowk home in Old Delhi. His Dadi (grandmother) was making warm aloo paratha. Aarav had a school project — he had to write about the capital of India.
His mother had bought a new round speaker last week. Aarav looked at it and asked aloud, “What is the capital of India?” In a sweet voice the speaker replied, “New Delhi!” Aarav clapped his hands. “Wow Dadi, the speaker knows the answer!”
Dadi smiled. “This is not magic, beta. This is AI. The speaker listens to your words, the AI inside it understands, and it answers from its big memory.” Aarav was so happy. He had a new friend at home — and it was an AI friend.
Story 2: Priya Helps a Foreign Friend
From: Madurai, Tamil Nadu · Character: Priya, age 9
Priya lives near the famous Meenakshi Temple in Madurai. One evening, a foreign tourist named John was lost. John spoke only English. Priya knew some English but he could not understand her Tamil words.
Priya’s elder brother showed John an app on his mobile phone. John spoke into it: “Where is the temple?” The app instantly wrote the Tamil translation. Priya read it and pointed the way!
John smiled and waved “Thank you!” Priya whispered “Nandri!” The app on the phone is an AI translator. It learns from millions of words and can change one language to another in less than a second. AI is a friend to people from every land.

Learn by reading the answers
1. Is a calculator an example of AI?
Show answer
Answer: A simple calculator only does what you press. It does NOT learn or understand language. So a normal calculator is not AI. But the calculator inside a smart phone that understands voice commands like ‘What is 25 plus 47?’ has AI inside it.
2. Why did the smart speaker know about Delhi?
Show answer
Answer: AI learns from huge amounts of information called data. The speaker had already read millions of facts, including that New Delhi is the capital of India. So it could answer Aarav quickly.
3. How is AI different from a doll that talks?
Show answer
Answer: A talking doll only says a few fixed sentences. It cannot understand new questions. AI can listen to many different questions and try to give a sensible answer each time.
4. What did the translator app do for John?
Show answer
Answer: The translator app heard John’s English words. AI inside the app converted those English words into Tamil text. Now Priya could read and help. AI made friendship easier.
5. Can AI be wrong sometimes?
Show answer
Answer: Yes! Sometimes AI gives the wrong answer because it did not have enough good data to learn from. That is why we must always check AI’s answers, just like we check our own homework.
