📖 Chapter 2 of 9 · AI For New Learner Basic 2 (Multi Indian Language) · Class 5
Chapter 2: Computers & Data Around Us (Recap)
What we will remember
- What is a computer? What is data?
- How is data different from information?
- Where does AI find its DATA in everyday life?
- Meeting Lakshmi from Kerala and Manjeet from Punjab.
What is data?
What is data?
DATA means tiny pieces of information. Your name is data. The number of pencils in your bag is data. A picture of the Taj Mahal is data. A song playing on the radio is data. AI is like a hungry friend — it eats lots and lots of data, and then it learns to do something useful.
Story 1: Lakshmi and the Library Book
From: Kochi, Kerala · Character: Lakshmi, age 10
Lakshmi loves reading. She lives in Kochi, near the green backwaters of Kerala. Every Saturday she goes to the public library with her Achan (father).
Last Saturday she wanted a book on dolphins. The new library has a small computer screen. Lakshmi typed “dolphins” and PRESS!! The computer showed: “Book No. 234, Shelf 4, Row B — Available.” Lakshmi walked straight to the shelf and found her book.
The librarian uncle smiled. “The computer keeps DATA about every book. The title, the author, the shelf, even who borrowed it last. AI uses this data to help you in seconds.” Lakshmi realised — data is not boring numbers; data is the key to finding any treasure!
Story 2: Manjeet’s Farm Helper
From: Amritsar, Punjab · Character: Manjeet, age 10
Manjeet lives in a village near Amritsar. His Bauji (father) grows wheat in the golden fields of Punjab. This year, Bauji put a small white box in the field.
“What is this Bauji?” asked Manjeet. “This is a sensor, my son. It measures the water in the soil and sends DATA to my mobile phone. The AI on the phone tells me — should we water the field today, or wait?”
Now Bauji wastes no water and the wheat is taller than ever. Manjeet is proud — his small farm uses big AI! Across Punjab, more and more farmers are using such smart machines. Data from the field becomes a clever decision in the hand. That is how AI helps Indian villages too — not only big cities.

Read each answer twice — they make the idea easy
1. What is the difference between DATA and INFORMATION?
Show answer
Answer: Data is a small fact, like “32°C”. Information is the meaning we get when we look at the data — “Today is a hot day in Chennai.” AI takes data and turns it into useful information for us.
2. Why does the library computer find books so fast?
Show answer
Answer: Because all books’ details are stored as data in the computer. When Lakshmi types one word, the computer searches its data and gives an answer in less than a second. A human would take hours.
3. How does the farm sensor know it is dry?
Show answer
Answer: The sensor has a tiny stick inside the soil. The stick can feel wetness like our fingers do. It sends this wetness data to a mobile app, where AI reads it and decides.
4. Are pictures and sound also data?
Show answer
Answer: Yes! Photos, songs, videos, and voice notes are also data. AI can learn from all of them. That is why an AI camera can recognise faces — it has seen millions of face pictures (data).
5. Can a computer work without data?
Show answer
Answer: Without data, a computer is like an empty cooking pot — nothing can be made. The more good data we give AI, the better it learns and the better it helps us.
How AI thinks — Data → Information → Action
| Step 1: DATA | Step 2: AI THINKS | Step 3: ACTION |
|---|---|---|
| Numbers, words, pictures, sounds. Example: ‘soil is 20% wet’ |
AI looks at the data and finds a pattern. Example: ‘too dry!’ |
AI tells us what to do. Example: ‘switch on the water pump’ |
Try this at home
Look at the weather app on your phone or TV. The app collects DATA from the sky (clouds, rain, wind). AI THINKS — it finds patterns and predicts tomorrow’s weather. Then it shows the ACTION you should take: ‘Carry an umbrella!’ or ‘Wear cool clothes!’
Can you spot 3 more places at home where Data → AI Thinks → Action is happening?
