📖 Chapter 2 of 9 · AI For New Learner Basic 3 (Multi Indian Language) · Class 6
Chapter 2: Data, Patterns & Algorithms
In this chapter
- Quick remember: What is DATA?
- What is BIG DATA? Why is it so big?
- Patterns — how AI’s secret superpower works!
- Meeting Dev (Bhopal) and Saanvi (Pune).
- Algorithms — step-by-step recipes for computers.
The Big Idea
Imagine a HUGE library — bigger than all the libraries in India put together. Now imagine someone scans every book, every photo, every video, every voice message, every weather report from across India. THAT is what we call BIG DATA. AI learns from all of it — and finds patterns we humans cannot.
Did you know?
Every minute, Indians send over 4 lakh WhatsApp messages, take 30 lakh photos, and watch over 10 crore minutes of YouTube videos. All of this becomes DATA that AI can learn from.
Story 1: Dev’s Big Data Adventure
From: Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh · Character: Dev, age 11
Dev lives in Bhopal — the city of lakes. His Papa works in a big software office in MP Nagar. One Saturday, Papa took Dev to his office. “Beta, today I’ll show you something amazing — BIG DATA.”
On the big screen, Papa showed Dev all the things being counted in real time: every WhatsApp chat in India, every UPI payment, every Google search, every weather sensor reading, every CCTV feed. “All of this is DATA, Dev. By the time we finish lunch, India will have made enough data to fill a thousand thousand books!”
Dev was amazed. “And AI reads all this?” Papa nodded. “Yes! That is why we call AI smart — it reads more in one second than you and I will read in our whole life.”
Story 2: Saanvi the Pattern Detective
From: Pune, Maharashtra · Character: Saanvi, age 10
Saanvi loves puzzles. Her Aaji (grandmother) calls her the Pattern Detective. On her birthday, Saanvi got a small AI puzzle book.
The book showed: 2, 4, 6, 8, ___ . “Easy!” said Saanvi, “It’s 10. The number goes up by 2 each time.” Next puzzle: circle, square, circle, square, ___ . “Circle! The shapes repeat.”
Aaji smiled, “You know how AI learns? Just like this. AI looks at MILLIONS of examples and finds the pattern. When you can predict the next thing, you have found the pattern. That is what makes AI smart!” Saanvi puffed up with pride — she had been thinking like an AI all along!

Master data, patterns and the magic of algorithms
1. What is the difference between Data and Big Data?
Show answer
Answer: Data is a small fact, like ‘35°C in Chennai today’. Big Data is millions of such facts collected together — for example, the temperature of every Indian city for the last 50 years. AI uses Big Data to find hidden patterns.
2. Find the next number: 3, 6, 9, 12, ___
Show answer
Answer: 15. The pattern is +3 each time. This is exactly how AI works — it sees the pattern and predicts the next thing.
3. What is an algorithm?
Show answer
Answer: An algorithm is a step-by-step recipe. Like the steps to make tea: 1) Boil water, 2) Add tea leaves, 3) Add milk, 4) Add sugar, 5) Strain. Computers follow algorithms to solve problems.
4. Where does AI get its data in India?
Show answer
Answer: From WhatsApp chats (with permission), Aadhaar-linked records, weather stations, traffic cameras, hospital reports, Google searches, online shopping clicks, satellite photos of farms — and more!
5. Can a pattern be in pictures and sounds?
Show answer
Answer: Yes! Every cat photo has pattern: 2 pointy ears, whiskers, fur. Every cricket commentary has pattern: ‘six!’, ‘wicket!’. AI learns the pattern in any kind of data — numbers, pictures, voice, video.
Did you know?
The word ‘algorithm’ comes from a great Persian mathematician named Al-Khwarizmi, who lived around 800 AD. His ideas helped invent algebra and computers!

Questions — Chapter 2
Think hard — be a Pattern Detective like Saanvi!
A. Find the next item in the pattern
- 5, 10, 15, 20,
- Mon, Wed, Fri,
- A, C, E, G,
- ○, △, ○, △,
- 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, (this is a famous pattern!)
B. Short Answers
- What does ‘BIG’ in Big Data mean? Give an example.
- Write a 4-step algorithm for brushing your teeth.
- What does AI do with patterns it finds?
- Where did Dev see Big Data?
- Why is finding a pattern useful for AI?
