Chapter 3: AI’s 5 Super Senses

In this chapter

  • AI has 5 super senses — eyes, ears, mouth, brain, and hands.
  • Vision AI: Lalita’s AI camera near the Varanasi ghats.
  • Voice AI: Dorji teaches AI to translate his language.
  • How AI ‘thinks’ inside — a peek at the brain!
  • What AI can do that humans cannot — and what we still do better.

Story 1: Lalita’s AI Camera in Varanasi

From: Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh · Character: Lalita, age 11

Lalita points a Vision AI app at a boat on the Ganga, and it instantly labels it “BOAT 92%”.

Lalita lives in the holy city of Varanasi, by the river Ganga. Her uncle works for a tourism company. One morning at Dashashwamedh Ghat, he gave her his phone with a new app.

“Point it at anything, beta, and watch.” Lalita pointed at the river — the app drew a box around a boat and wrote ‘BOAT 92%’. She pointed at the temple — ‘TEMPLE 95%’. At the morning sun — ‘SUN 98%’. “How does it know?!” she asked.

Uncle explained, “This is VISION AI. It has been trained on millions of pictures. Now it can recognise things in your photo in less than a second. Vision AI helps doctors find diseases, helps farmers spot crop problems, and helps blind people ‘see’ through their phones.” Lalita was amazed — AI has EYES!

Story 2: Dorji and the Voice Translator

From: Arunachal Pradesh · Character: Dorji, age 10

Dorji speaks in Monpa and the Voice AI speaker instantly plays it back in English for his pen pal.

Dorji’s small village is in Arunachal Pradesh, deep in the Himalayas. His mother tongue is Monpa. But Dorji’s school teaches in Hindi — and his pen pal Rohit from Mumbai writes in English!

Last month, Dorji got a small speaker that has VOICE AI. He spoke into it in Monpa, “Namaste, Rohit! How are you?” The speaker listened, the AI inside understood, and instantly played back the English version: “Hello Rohit, how are you?”

Rohit was thrilled. Soon they were chatting every day, each speaking their own language. “Voice AI listens, thinks, and speaks back,” Dorji explained to his Ama (mother). “It is like having ears AND a mouth — but inside a small box. AI has senses, Ama, just like us!”

AI’s senses — explained simply

1. What is Vision AI?

Show answer

Answer: Vision AI is the part of AI that ‘sees’ photos and videos. It can find faces, count people, spot diseases in X-rays, read number plates, and more. Lalita’s app uses Vision AI.

2. What is Voice AI?

Show answer

Answer: Voice AI ‘hears’ sounds and words. It can understand your voice command, translate from one language to another, and even read out a story. Dorji’s translator uses Voice AI.

3. Can AI ‘feel’ like we do?

Show answer

Answer: Not really. AI does not feel happy or sad. It only LOOKS like it does — for example, a chat AI might say ‘I’m so glad to help you!’ But that is text, not real feeling. Emotions are something we humans still own.

4. How does AI ‘think’?

Show answer

Answer: AI uses a thing called a NEURAL NETWORK — lots of small math units (like tiny brain cells) connected together. They pass information from input to output, just like our brain neurons. It is NOT a real brain, but a copy of the idea.

5. Which AI sense is used when you say ‘Hey Siri’?

Show answer

Answer: Voice AI — the speaker listens to your words. After it understands, it also uses brain AI to find the answer, and then mouth AI to speak it back. Three senses in one!

Peek inside AI’s brain

AI uses ‘neural networks’ — an idea copied from our own brain. Each small circle is called a ‘neuron’. In your own brain, you have over 86 billion of these! AI brains have far fewer — but they work very fast. Information flows from left to right: a photo of a cat enters, AI thinks, and AI says ‘CAT!’.

A neural network: a photo enters on the left, flows through layers of “neurons”, and AI says “CAT!” on the right.

Did you know?

Our human brain runs on just 20 watts of power — less than a tube light! Even the biggest AI computers use thousands of watts. So our brain is still THE most efficient computer in the universe!
