Chapter 4: Robots & AI — Best Friends
In this chapter
- What is a Robot? What is AI? How are they different?
- Vikram (Chennai) visits a robot factory.
- Aaradhya (Goa) controls a beach robot from a tablet!
- Robots in Indian factories, hospitals, and farms.
- When robots and AI come together — magic happens!
Story 1: Vikram’s Visit to a Robot Factory
From: Chennai, Tamil Nadu · Character: Vikram, age 11
Vikram’s school took the children for a field trip to an electronics factory in Sriperumbudur, near Chennai. The factory makes mobile phones for the whole world.
Inside, Vikram saw something amazing — long shiny arms moving smoothly, picking up small parts, placing them perfectly. “Are these robots, Sir?” he asked. The manager nodded. “Yes — and look up there.” Vikram saw a big screen with green text: ‘SCAN OK. SORT BY COLOUR. ROBOT-1: PICK. DONE: 250/300’.
“The AI is the boss,” the manager smiled. “It tells each robot what to do. Without AI, the robots would just be metal arms. Together, they make 1000 phones every hour — better and faster than any human!” Vikram wanted to become a robot engineer when he grew up.
Story 2: Aaradhya’s Beach Helper
From: Goa · Character: Aaradhya, age 10
Aaradhya lives in beautiful Goa, by the Arabian Sea. Her cousin in Bangalore made her a coding project for her birthday — a small robotic arm with a camera.
On Vagator beach one Sunday, Aaradhya set up the robot. She opened her tablet, and on the screen, the robot’s camera showed shells scattered on the sand. She touched a shell on the screen — and ZIP! The robot’s arm picked up that exact shell and placed it in the box.
Aaradhya’s little brother clapped, “How does it know?!” Aaradhya explained, “There are TWO smart things working together. The ROBOT is the body — the arm that moves. The AI is the brain — it sees what I touch on screen and tells the arm where to go. Robot + AI = best team!”

Robots, AI, and how they work as a team
1. Is every robot AI? Is every AI a robot?
Show answer
Answer: No! A robot is a machine with body parts that can move. AI is the smart brain. A toy car robot may have NO AI. A chatbot has AI but NO body. The best ones, like a self-driving car, have BOTH.
2. What is the famous ‘Sophia’ robot?
Show answer
Answer: Sophia is a robot built by Hanson Robotics. She has a human-like face and can talk and smile. She uses AI to understand questions and reply. India also has its own famous robot — Mitra — used in Indian airports!
3. Why are robots used in factories?
Show answer
Answer: Robots can work 24 hours without rest. They can do the same task perfectly thousands of times. They can lift very heavy things safely. They can work in hot or dangerous places where humans should not go.
4. Are robots replacing all human jobs?
Show answer
Answer: Not really. Robots take over BORING or DANGEROUS jobs. Humans do NEW jobs — designing robots, teaching AI, fixing them. That is why India needs more robot engineers, not fewer.
5. What do hospitals in India use robots for?
Show answer
Answer: Some big hospitals like AIIMS use robots for surgery — the doctor controls a very precise robot arm. Other robots deliver medicines through corridors. Some even clean floors during night shifts!
Robots in India today
Real robots are working all over our country. Here is where you will find them.
- Factories — Maruti Suzuki, Tata Motors and Mahindra factories use thousands of robot arms to make cars.
- Hospitals — AIIMS Delhi and Apollo hospitals use robots to help doctors do precise surgery.
- Airports — Mitra, a robot made in Bangalore, welcomes travellers at Indian airports.
- Farms — Drones with AI inspect crop health over thousands of acres in Punjab and Haryana.
- Space — ISRO’s Chandrayaan-3 had a small rover (a kind of robot!) that drove on the Moon in 2023.
- Homes — Robot vacuum cleaners are becoming common in Indian cities — they clean your house on their own!
